The Lady Vanishes

I have no regrets — I’ve gone everywhere. What is there left but marriage?

Gus Don’t believe truth!

Gus I love basketball. But I’m too short!

Harry First we have to play games, then we have to see who wins.

Harry No cute! Real! From the heart!

Harry Fairy Harry! I wouldn’t be surprised! Might be better off!

Archie I’m not showering for you.

Archie You have to be free, you have to be an individual.

It’s not a question of understanding it. If you feel it, you feel it.

Who do you belong to, Lelia?
Why, I belong to me.

You’re strong. Your beauty’s your health.

People die easily nowadays. Especially artists.

Gorgeous, it’s a mistake to be ill. And mistakes kill!

What’s a song? How long can it last?

Everyone spoils me. No one loves me.

Damn Tuesday. I’ll do as I like.

I thought everyone looked at me. I only look at myself. It wears me out.

Cleo (on posing nude) I’d feel so exposed, afraid that somebody would find a fault.
Dorothy Nonsense. My body makes me happy, not proud.

Streets should have living people’s names.

Raoul A laugh’s good for any illness.

I’m afraid of everything. Birds, storms, lifts, needles, and now this great fear of death.

I prefer Florence. I prefer flora to fauna.

Every great feeling is full of little vanities; also the great spirit of silliness.

My fear seems to be gone. I seem to be happy.

A short digression on Charles Boyer…

Yes, I am endeared. I am, in fact, ensorceled. His inhumanly arched eyebrows, his little winks and half-smiles, and that ability to at once maintain full control of his material while shining the spotlight on his costar: yes, that is talent; yes, this is love. And no, Cluny Brown, it’s not just the cocktails giving you that persian cat feeling… I think we both know too well it has a bit to do with Mr Charles Boyer. Rawr.

In-transit romances

Nothing better suited to Hollywood romance than three weeks out of time, away from life, falling in love with a stranger, spending days idly and nights actively.
