Wow, this is so much better than its sort of cloying, sort of patronizing title would lead one to presume (that “another way” being lesbianism). If I have any problem with this film, it might be that the characters aren’t particularly well-developed or motivated; they remain merely “types;” it’s hard to imagine what attracts them to one another or drives them in general. I might also wonder if the political climate (Eva is a reporter who wants to tell the whole truth) isn’t explored as deeply as it might have been. But everything in this is so pared down to essentials, and so effectively, that this didn’t bother me much. Enough was conveyed in mere glances through two very fine performances that getting past the ‘mystique’ level seemed unnecessary. Anyway, it’s a lot more sophisticated and natural than most ‘romances’ of any configuration, and doesn’t drop the ball on an ending that had to be. |
