Yeah, Makk’s mannered exploration of memory and imagination through fast editing and random inserts is back here, and I haven’t warmed up to it one bit. Now add colored lenses, fish-eye lenses, distorting camera angles: at its worst, this is silliness, and at best, vaguely intriguing, though at no time do I get a concrete sense of the emotion he is trying to convey through technique. It’s a worthwhile experiment, but for some reason I find it exasperating when he tries so hard to render visually the workings of the mind, and the result is so far off actual experience. So I’m hoping this is only meant as a companion piece to Love, and that this isn’t part of his signature style. This time it was too pervasive, and I had nothing “real” to grab onto.
