Frank and downright racy (”I’d like to make love to you and hear you scream for help!”) and full of zingers, Norma Shearer undergoes a one-woman sexual revolution after catching her husband in an affair and finding he won’t forgive her as he expected her to forgive him when she has a one-night stand with a friend. “From now on, you’re the only man in the world my door’s closed to!” she announces on her way out. Shearer is the ultimate artificial classic Hollywood actress, mannered and vapid and shrill, but she works in this role. Just such a contrast to more natural and emotionally grounded contemporaries like Dunne, or anyone with a bit of (even affected) charm. But this is the role for her, and she vamps it up in her aggravating way. Witty and provocative; gotta love pre-code when girls got to have fun for a while. Also, Robert Montgomery couldn’t be cuter.
