This is the finest incarnation of the usual Garbo character I’ve yet seen — the worldly, sexually liberated, melancholy woman turned by true love — and a better story of sacrifice than Camille. Gorgeous expressionist photography and frank, honest character interplay make up for some staginess in the dialogue and action. It’s like a 19th century novel about a fallen woman realized on film, but if that ever appeals to you this is a shining example.
