On the cusp of a higher grade and during many grand moments I thought of adding it to my 100, but the ending — while inevitable — unfolds lamely, and has left me on a down note which many other dull moments seem to confirm. In any case this is a lovely film, and just what melodrama should be: events come naturally from established facts about its characters, rather than being wrung out with manipulation and ungrounded emotion. The performances, too, hit just the right note. I’d love to see it in a decent DVD package someday.
