It’s the answer to the question, and I’m sure you’ve asked yourself, what would happen if Lucy Warriner really had run off to Oklahoma with Dan Leeson in The Awful Truth? It is exactly as DULL as you’d imagine, and alas no Cary Grant to save her. It’s sad to see my Dunnie close out her career with such lackluster films, here more slapstick than she’d ever done and she goes along with it almost too willingly. Because that’s one of the things I love about her great characters, like Lucy Warriner, who may be caught in a nutty screwball world but are always one step ahead of the action, only going screwball when it suits their interests. Here a supposedly great Broadway composer gives it all up for a ranch and Fred MacMurray and fish-out-of-water pratfalls, and it’s just depressing.
