This is a Bergman that I think would suit those of you who don’t like those talky, hyper-self-aware films of his. This one’s much more atmospheric and evidently emotional, in a deeply disturbing consideration of what war does to even the most disinterested parties. Of course it is that disinterest — that ignorance, while remaining technically innocent — that leads to shame. Who isn’t complicit in war? |
