Thoroughly a Haneke film, but somehow less satisfying than his others. It should be a fascinating character study, but it doesn’t let us get close enough to the characters. So it becomes an impressionistic swath of the effect apocalypse might have on people: reducing us to survival, no longer caring about luxuries like enjoyment and justice, living something like a large percentage of the world’s population does today. Ultimately effective.
